[divider_line] glasses & hat

Two fashionable items that Alexis took home were a pair of white-framed sunglasses for $1 and a straw fedora for $3. Both items are super versatile and perfect for Spring. The One Spot also carries hair clips, headbands, and jewelry and handbags from time to time. Keep your eyes open for what your local Target may carry. Every trip is as affordable as it is surprising.

Pictured above are some of the items Alexis saw at her local Target's The One Spot. TopButtons purchased the rest of the stock on those buttons pictured in the bottom left. We think they're as cute as button and perfect for crafting.

[divider_line]

To save even more money, visit The One Spot during a shift in season or holidays. A lot of their inventory is catered to the current and ever-changing events and seasons, so their stock is always changing. When they have left-overs on their old stock -- for example, right after Christmas -- they discount those seasonal items 50-70% off. With prices already so inviting, these deals are steals!

Another Glimpse into the One and Only Christian Fashion Week

Screen-Shot-2014-03-07-at-12.28.11-AM.png

If you were in awe of our first glimpse of Christian Fashion Week, you'll definitely love these looks as well. Pay attention to any common themes throughout each line, because they're just a glimpse into what this Spring season has to offer. [divider_line]

designer 2 Designer Mikra uses fashion as a ministry tool. As pictured, her line is full of vibrant hues of blue and orange. We think these are great looks for Spring because the colors are so rich and the floral embellishments are just as in tune with the season.

[divider_line]

designer 3 The designer --  Dali Hernandez of House of Dali -- loves to put God first and fashion next. The first look is a perfect piece to have in your wardrobe because every lady needs a little black dress. Dali loves to play around with colors and textures, as seen in her blue maxi dress and bright pink tutu. While we don't think all of these outfits are practical for a day out and about, we do appreciate their playful nature.

[divider_line]

designer 4 "Elegant" was the first word that came to mind when we spotted this line by Jessica Rios from All Brides 2 Be. It was so hard to select our favorite four looks because each gown was equally beautiful in its own way. Designer Rios is so gifted in her eye for creating cuts that are flattering to all body types and figures. We love the fabrics she used as she incorporated chiffon, silk, tulle and more. In need of a dress for prom, graduation, or even a wedding? They have it all!

Our Top Buttons favorite definitely has to be the fourth gown pictured. This wedding dress is so intricately detailed with its beading and coordinating veil.

[divider_line]

designer 6 In an conversation after the show, we learned that designer Angel Myers is a school teacher by day and designer by night. We admire her hard work ethic, because as you can see her designs are flawless. Myers' collection is fun, colorful, and really appealing to the eye. Her designs include a lot of options for plus-size models, which is a quality hard to find in the fashion industry.

We appreciate the bright watercolor canvas of the first look. The A-line mold of the dress compliments any body type. Dress number two features cape-like patterned sleeves that are a bit unconventional, yet it somehow works against the sea-green maxi dress. Outfit number three had us all reminiscing back to the days when the Cheetah Girls was a thing. We love the one-shoulder look which was leveled out by a high-low quality on the opposite side. The leather leggings made it all complete. Finally, dress four speaks for itself with its simple shape.

[divider_line]

designer 7 If you haven't noticed a common trend between all of these fashion lines yet, look again. Each one features BRIGHT COLORS, which are super popular in the Spring. One thing that makes this designer -- Elaine by EJ -- stand out from the rest, is her high-waisted pants and skirts. The way EJ designs these outfits is so cutting edge and slimming. Also, check out how simple and sleek this line is with its clever color-blocking. Expect to see a lot more of these trends on the clothing racks this Spring!

[divider_line]

designer 8 Elegantees is a line that is so much more behind what meets the eye. They have a beautiful back story. Many of the women who sew these clothes have been rescued victims of sex-trafficking. Who knew that you could look cute, express your personality, all while knowing that such purpose is stitched into the seams of each article of clothing!

Co-founder of Christian Fashion Week -- Mayra Gomez -- fashions outfit number two! She looks like an Egyptian goddess with her gold headband and gold trimming on her blouse. The cold-shoulder sleeves expose her arms, and her vibrant green skirt is cinched into one side.

Outfit three is just perfect with its red-on-red composition. The tulle tutu isn't just for the runway! We actually saw her wearing this look as an audience member on a different day!

[divider_line]

All in all, we were well pleased with the show from start to finish and we hope that our documentations of the runway made you feel like you were part of the process too!

A Glimpse into the One and Only Christian Fashion Week

1454973_415242405269149_1153756807_n.jpg

We know what you're thinking. "Christian Fashion? What's that?" We asked ourselves the same thing, and the truth is, there's no such thing as Christian Fashion, but what does exist is fashion that is influenced by our Christian beliefs and fashion that reflects our morals. Christian Fashion Week provided a platform where designers and fashionistas alike could come together and celebrate their love for fashion while also staying true to those values.

If you're wondering why there was such a delay in our review: Good things come to those who wait, that's why this post is so fashionably late.

Enjoy!

Designer Renee Scarborough's swimwear line was both modest and versatile! These are some of Top Button's favorite looks from her line, but they were all flawlessly made! During the show, the audience had the opportunity to interact with the models and designer to make sure the suits were just as practical to wear as they were stylish.

Scarborough has three main goals as she wants all of her designs to: Look Beautiful, Fit Perfectly, and Stand Out from the Status Quo.

[divider_line]

Screen Shot 2014-02-25 at 1.23.43 AM

This designer -- Madame Weathersby -- had the whole audience in awe with her exquisite details and eye-catching accents. She incorporated lots of lace, sequins, feathers, and creative sleeves. Most of her designs are for more up-scale events, but are guaranteed to make a bold statement. Wear her line to accomplish a classy look. Need a dress for prom? Her line has lots to choose from!

[blockquote]My favorite dress of her line was the sequined gown! I almost didn't catch a picture of it because I was too in awe observing it with my bare eyes. - Alexis Gauthier[/blockquote]

[divider_line]

Screen Shot 2014-02-25 at 1.25.54 AM

This line -- by Ronnisha Tolefree -- had a little bit of everything! From organized chaos to classy and collected, each look is so diverse in nature. The average person would have never thought to pair different polka-dot pieces together in one outfit, but Ronnisha accomplishes it so flawlessly and even adds an emerald pop of color.

The most unique outfit is the second. The designer layered a sweetheart neckline mixed fabric peplum top over a mid-sleeve polka dot top. This outfit catches people even more off guard with it's floral embellished pants.

The last two looks pictured are more normal. All in all, we are fans!

[divider_line]

Screen Shot 2014-02-25 at 1.26.30 AM

Designer Sumita Bhojwani of KalaXpress loves fashion because it gives her a way to express personality, as her brand name suggests. Each of her looks are so rich in culture and color. As seen in these photos, she is skilled in embroidery, beading, and working with silky fabrics. The biggest inspiration behind this line was Indian tradition.

We love the lace dresses in hues of blue in the first three looks. Photo four shows off the vibrant harem pants that can be seen in variations through out other looks in the KalaXpress line. Wear any of these outfits to be bold.

FUN FACT: The word Kala means BEAUTIFUL in Hindi (a language spoken in India).

[divider_line]Screen Shot 2014-02-25 at 1.26.55 AM

This line was designed by Narrowgate -- a couple from the UK. They used a lot of plaids, ponchos, and tweeds. While this trend doesn't resonate with everyone, it does however provide warm and comfortable winter options. The pink tweed jacket in look 3 is a Top Button's favorite!

[divider_line]

Screen Shot 2014-02-25 at 1.28.22 AM

We found this line to be the most casual and age-appropriate! The designer -- Medinah -- has also had experience designing for Gap! We loved the neutrals of this line. She paid close attention to detail with flattering cuts, touches of sparkle, and carefully layered looks. All of her designs are so complete and ready-to-wear! It brings a whole new meaning to the phrase dress for success.

[blockquote]Since 2004, I've designed for major retailers like Gap, JCP, Kellwood, Lucky Brands, and Sunrise Brands. - Medinah[/blockquote]

[divider_line]Screen Shot 2014-02-25 at 1.20.24 AM

The finally of the show was by 18 year old designer Julia Chew. She called her line Xaolin. Julia gets her design inspiration from nature and God's creation and creates masterpieces based off of that. It was such a great way to end the show! We love Julia's ambition and success at such a young age. Her talent really shines through.

Stay tuned for an exclusive follow-up that features detailed pictures of Julia Chew's line. (Coming soon on Top Buttons.)

Flower Beauty Review: Part 2

IMG_3206.jpg

Oh, the power of lipstick. It’s extraordinary how such a small item can seemingly transform not only a woman’s outward appearance, but also her attitude. Thanks again to Flower for sending us some fabulous product to sample. Last week we reviewed face products and today it's all about the lips.

IMG_3152

Flower's Kiss Stick High Shine Lip Color in Berry Bloom is a beautiful shade of lipstick. The formula is rich and creamy, it glides on smooth, and has a ton of shine. The quality of this lipstick is impressive and so is the price. This formula is definitely a favorite in the Flower line.

IMG_3073-2

Flower's Kiss Stick Velvet Lip Color in Desert Flower looks similar to Berry Bloom. The difference is that it's a bit lighter and it's matte. Matte formulas have a tendency to be drying so exfoliating the lips and priming them with lip balm is key.

IMG_3081-4

Kiss Stick Velvet Lip Color in Rosey Garden is a bright, vivid pink. It has a fresh, modern feel about it. It's great for days when you want to add a little pop of color to your beauty regime.

IMG_2969

The Flower High Shine On Lip Gloss Wand was voted MVP by Redbook in 2013. It's hard to find a quality lip gloss at drug store prices, so finding this product is a gold mine. The formula is rich, moisturizing and long lasting. This will be a definite re-purchase in the days ahead.

Kuddos to Flower for providing us with quality products that are affordable. Flower is sold exclusively at Walmart. To purchase the above products you can visit your local Walmart or go online to walmart.com. For more reviews on Flower  beauty products click here and here.

The 2014 Oscars Best Dressed

oscars1.jpeg

The night of the 2014 Oscars this past Sunday night had celebrities walking down the red carpet in style as paparazzi took thousands of photos. With a rainy start to the eventing, celebrities arrived with umbrellas before walking the red carpet. The 86th Annual Awards ceremony was viewed by millions and we were anxious to see what the celebrities chose to wear for this important event. Celebrities dressed in top notch attire to potentially receive an award. We picked out gorgeous dresses we thought stood out at the awards ceremony. cate1Cate Blanchett won the Best Actress Award with her role in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine while wearing an elaborate Armani Prive gown. The dress was worn perfectly by Cate with her luminous skin tone and the light gold color of the dress.

jenn1

Jennifer Lawrence defines best-dressed at the awards in this beautifully fitting strapless red dress made by Dior Haute Couture. After tripping just moments after exiting her limo, she quickly gets back on her feet looking adorable as usual. She exudes confidence and beauty in her choice of the floor length gown even after falling on the ground.

penelope1Another dress that we could not help but love was worn by Penelope Cruz. This faint pink Giambattista Valli gown flowed with her as she walked the red carpet with a beautiful choice of diamond accessories. We can safely say that these ladies looked amazing for this event.

Fit For A Princess

969854_542425289132707_211328795_n.jpg

Imagine that picture-perfect moment when your confidence is sky-high and your adrenaline is rushing -- all because you said Yes to the Dress that makes you feel like a princess. It's a truly priceless experience, however, the sad reality is that not everyone gets that prom-perfect experience due to conflicting circumstances such as finances or other factors.

Fortunately, for the Lakeland community, an organization called Fit for a Princess was created to ensure that every girl gets the opportunity to attend Prom AND feel like a princess in the process.

[divider_line]

This past Saturday -- February 22nd -- the second annual Fit for a Princess dress giveaway was quite the success. A whopping 27 high-school ladies attended the event and received the prom dress of their dreams from a selection of over 300 dresses donated through Southeastern University and Florida Southern.

[blockquote]Approximately 32 people volunteered during the event and countless others helped before and after.[/blockquote]

photo-33

Students who benefitted from this event attended schools ranging from Kathleen High School, Lakeland Senior High, George Jenkins, Lake Gibson, and even Winter Haven High School.

[blockquote]Everyone was really positive about the whole experience. Mothers crying, saying this event meant so much their daughters was pretty amazing. The reactions on everyone's faces said what words couldn't. -says Founder and President Rachel Kelly [/blockquote]

[divider_line]

Basically, the event started by being greeted at the entrance. Each princess would walk down the red carpet where they checked-in.

photo-34

After check in, each princess awaited their personal Stylist in the lounge. While waiting, the princesses had the opportunity to enter into a raffle and enjoy refreshments.

When the Stylist called the name of their princess, the dress hunt could truly begin! Each princess and one guest was taken to the collection of dresses to search the racks. A princess could bring 3 dresses back into the dressing room area and the hunt would continue until they found the perfect dress.

photo-36

Once the dress was chosen, the princess was ready for her big reveal on stage in the lounge. Once escorted onto the stage, Miss Florida Teen 2014 Natalie Fiallo presented each girl with a gift and a "Prom Princess" sash. After her grand announcement, a follow-up photo was taken at the Photo Booth.

photo-1.PNG

Once all of this was complete and the princess changed out of her dress, she was ready for "check out" where her dress was bagged and she was provided with a Swag Bag full of prom necessities like makeup, perfume, a tooth brush and more.

[divider_line]

[blockquote]You can plan for the event up to the smallest details, but you can never be sure how the girls that attend will respond. While the set up was what I expected, the reaction from the princesses was indescribable. Every girl left with the biggest smile on her face, and I could not have asked for anything more. -says Founder and President Rachel Kelly[/blockquote]

Flower Beauty Review: Part 1

use2.jpg

Today we are talking about one of my favorite topics MAKEUP! After a recent post reviewing Drew Barrymore’s cosmetics line Flower, the company was kind enough to send me a few more products to sample. Thanks guys! So let’s get started shall we?! IMG_3038-2

Let's start with their  Zoom-In Ultimate Mascara. Whether you want volume, lengthening, thickening or ALL three, you can have it. This mascara has a unique brush that is customizable. I received the mascara in brown which works great on the days that I want a natural look.

IMG_3223

Cream blushes have become a daily staple of mine. Flower's Win Some, Rouge Some Cream Blush in the color Primrose and Proper is the perfect peach/pink color. The product goes on smooth, has great color pay off, and lasts throughout the day. This is a definite re-purchase for me.

IMG_3238

Finding a quality drugstore foundation can be a daunting task, but Flower just made it is easier. Flower's Skincognito is a full coverage stick foundation. It is has an ultra creamy feel and glides on smooth. Oh and did I mention it's paraben free! I found this foundation to have excellent staying power and great coverage. As with any foundation to ensure the best coverage and application, I would highly recommend exfoliating, moisturizing, and priming beforehand. This foundation has a tendency to highlight any dry patches on the skin. For the best wear, I preferred using a primer underneath the foundation and setting it with powder.

Flower is exclusively sold at Walmart. If you want to purchase any of the above products, you can visit your local store or go online to walmart.com. In next week's post I will be reviewing lip products from Flower so stay tuned.

See you next week!

Happy Styling,

Rebekah

Trendy Tuesday: LOVING Love 21

love21_woventops_image.jpg

Normally we use this post every week to talk about a trend or style coming up for spring and summer, but today we're going to talk about a line of clothing that is beautiful and affordable- Love 21. This line comes from Forever 21, and is formally called "Love 21 Contemporary" and on top of just being the contemporary line, it's also better understood by the fashionistas who love F21 as the slightly "bigger" line. By this we mean, Love 21 clothing is a half-size larger than the Forever 21 equivalent. But whilst perusing the website, the things we noticed were that Love 21 clothing is just a touch more modest. Of course, like it's parent line it sells crop tops and bodycon dresses, but other items that it sells - dresses, for example - are longer and looser fitting. So today we'd like to spotlight some adorable pieces you can find at Forever 21 - just look for the Love 21 label!

DROP-WAIST DRESSES

We're loving this upcoming spring/summer trend that is shying away from the form-fitting, uber short and constricting dresses of the past and looking forward to looser dresses that focus on the cool shape and style of the dress, and often the print and texture of the fabric, rather than focusing on showing off body parts!

00127600-02

This floral drop-waist dress is fun, chic, past fingertip length (yay!), and only $24.80

00072210-02

This lace drop-waist dress combines loads of spring and summer trends all in one dress! Chic black & white, lace (always in style), and an affordable price - $29.80

LONGER LENGTHS

Sick of mini-skirts? Unlike a lot of teen oriented retailers, the Love 21 line carries skirts that aren't super short - but also aren't maxis!

00066040-01

This cute knee-length skirt keeps it classy with a fun print, and is priced at just $24.80

00066095-02

This button-down skirt is perfect for spring and summer, but makes a great transition piece as well! $27.80

KOOL KIMONOS

Another trend we're loving at Love 21? Sheer, breathable kimonos. Throw one over just about any outfit and you've just added come culture, class, and comfort to your outfit.

00128805-02

This fun and easy kimono combines a few things we love - art deco style and chevron stripes. This beauty can be found for $39.80

00126372-02

This sheer kimono has a fun print - and we love the way it's paired with faux leather pants and a simple tee! $19.80

Loving these trends? Try some of these as well: Contrast-Collared Button Downs, Stark Black & White, Holographic Accessories, Bomber Jackets, Fun Sweatshirts, and Smile-Worthy Shoes

Morgan Frazier, Brave Overcomer of Bullying

morgan1.jpg

Top Buttons had to admire Morgan Frazier who is an up and coming country music artist that has a passion to stop bullying in schools around the country. We find the amount of tragedy resulting from bullying is unbelievable today. She released her latest single "Hey Bully" that has captured the hearts of many and that could potentially save lives in the process. Morgan has brought a new twist to country music by using her past experiences of being made fun of to make a difference with her music. The extent of bullying she underwent caused her to leave her elementary school and become home schooled. Alongside her tremendous talent, her style is casual and relevant as she rocks the all-American girl look wearing blue jeans and fashionable tank tops. She is not afraid of being herself and her songs signify strength and perseverance dealing with bullying that once daunted her dreams.  She has such a pure, effortless tone to her voice that keeps you listening and she always seems to perform in her brown leather cowgirl boots! She has made appearances in schools and numerous radio stations across the country telling her story to encourage others in following their dreams. Morgan Frazier2/2013Spring Fashion 2013cr: Joe Hardwick

Morgan Frazier has partnered up with the anti-bullying campaign Stand for the Silent, to impact children and adults to end bullying altogether. Her message of strength and hope has encouraged us to spread her story and impact others around us.

Stand For The Silent is an organization that began by founders Kirk and Laura Smalley after suffering a tragedy with their son after continually being bullied. This was served as a platform to bring awareness of how serious the issue is.

morgan3

"I've already been touched by the power of this song from messages I've received from kids who have experienced bullying firsthand," Frazier says. "I look forward to working with Stand for the Silent to bring an end to this issue."

We anticipate great things to come out of this organization as Morgan continues to use her talent and experiences to stop bullying and encourage students to be who they were created to be, themselves.

2014 Fall/Winter New York Fashion Week: The Recap

73d2d2995b3a291a6abd469a2023e74a.jpg

Fashion week is always an exciting time. It's when designers, editors and fashionistas all come together for the common love of fashion. Everyone eagerly anticipates the beautiful silhouettes, luxurious fabrics and colors that will be trending in the days ahead. Of the many collections shown during New York Fashion Week, here are the ones that left the biggest impression on us. J Crew is the perfect marriage between classic and modern. We love their genius mix of patterns, layers and color pallets. The reoccurring pairing of white and black in this season's collection has stood out to us along with the abundance of floral patterns.

e1e05fbed51de0c6c503f478cab84c7f Kate Spade is always a breath of fresh air with structured, sophisticated lines and girly whimsy. We are used to her designs living up to her slogan "live colorfully" being full of color and vivid brights, but we are loving this collection of neutrals that screams Audrey Hepburn. fe4b0e81de61ee1fc39bf29bbb9bd53f

Tory Burch always wows us with her simple, yet elegant designs. This season she incorporated a little medieval flare into her collection. We especially love her shirt dresses, over the knee boots and knee highs.

33d33aa49a3ded74cae6b533b8afd9b0

This season's Michael Kors collection falls nothing short of luxurious, dramatic, and romantic. The flowy fabrics, pleated skirts, and fur are perfection. We are happy to see that fur will be a trend that is not going away any time soon.

001554c3799addbae7382f7658ebd33e

Rebecca Minkoff's designs are always cool, fashion forward, and city-chic. She prides herself in creating clothing that is stylish and statement worthy, yet wearable. She accomplishes her goal with this season's street-friendly metallics and edgy details.

Rebecca-Minkoff-FW-2014

NYFW never ceases to inspire its audience. Year after year designers wow us with new concepts and innovative designs. The fashion seen on the runways doesn't always align with Top Button's vision. In the midst of plunging necklines and rising hemlines, we are here to take designs and allow them to inspire us to find similar articles of clothing that are modest and wearable without compromising our values.

What were some of  your favorite collections from this season? Let us know in the comments below. We can't wait to hear from you!

Happy Styling,

Rebekah

Trendy Tuesday: Stark Black & White

Seasons come and go, and so do trends. But one thing that hasn't changed is the stark beauty of a colorless outfit. That sounds weird, but you know what we mean! The contrast between black and white creates a beautiful, modern-yet-timeless effect that can help fill out your wardrobe without too much work. Wearing all black and white can also be a great base or platform to wear other funky pieces. Have some crazy Kelly green sneakers you've been dying to wear? Use an all black and white outfit to make those super sneaks pop! Same goes for any out-there accessory, from jewelry to handbags, scarves to makeup! Wearing a black & white outfit is a great baseline, and is so, so easy to put together!

Kate Hansen Warms Up for an Olympic Luge Race Dancing to Beyonce

kateh.jpg

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi8RO0R0_ho

American Olympian Kate Hansen not only placed 10th in the luge competition at Sochi this past Tuesday, but she also has a passion to dance like no one's watching. This 21 year old athlete has become known for her pre race warm-up as she dances to none other than Beyonce! She explained that past injuries have made a typical warm-up difficult for her, and she has gained some serious attention for this comical and cute warm-up routine.  We say, who needs a reason to dance?!

Miss Hansen has competed in numerous competitions over the years winning Silver, Bronze and Gold in Championship events. Even though she did not receive a metal this year at the Olympics, she was a great sport. Hansen witnessed history Tuesday when her teammate, Erin Hamlin, won the first ever individual luge Olympic medal for the U.S. with a bronze-medal finish.

In an interview Hansen said, “The Olympic experience has been more than words,” “Just to be on the same platform as athletes I’ve looked up to for years, my entire life ... it’s an unbelievable feeling.”

She wins the Most Fun Competitor Award so far for the Sochi Olympics voted on by the Top Buttons team.  We might be biased.  She is after all, an American, a female, a young women who is clearly self-confident, passionate about what she believes in, tough as nails, and even supports her competitors.  So after watching this video in slow-mo a few times, we have learned some new dance moves.

And then we found this video on her personal website.  This girl makes you smile and she is FEARLESS…

Brooke Fraser's Folk-Pop Music & Style Makes Headlines

brooke.jpg

Singer-songwriter Brooke Fraser is well know for being involved in leading worship with Hillsong United around the world. Her involvement in the Hillsong church has been ongoing for the past 10 years. Though she's originally from New Zealand, Fraser has an awesome European style! We love the dress she wore when she walked the red carpet at the New Zealand Music Awards where she was being awarded the Edge Best Pop Album. Her recent hit single Something in the Water also won her the highest selling single. Along with her great style, Brooke Fraser has such great talent to share with the world. brook3

Brooke Fraser has numerous popular songs such as Scarlet, C.S. Lewis Song, Shadowfeet and of course Something in the Water. Her folk-pop sound and meaningful lyrics bring her music to a whole new level. She has performed alongside Hillsong United at conferences in the United States singing Desert Song, Lead me to the Cross, From the Inside Out and Beneath the Waters. We love her collection of clothing, from knee-length dresses with tights underneath to dress pants and a favored top. We think her style really compliments her gracefulness and confidence on stage singing.

Later this year, Brooke will be releasing a new album as well as begin a world-wide tour.

So Christina, tell us a little about yourself -- about your backstory and any formative experiences along the way. I was born and raised in Alaska. My Dad was a pastor, and summer camp was the highlight of every year. Every summer we spent a few weeks at Little Beaver Lake kids camp in Alaska. That’s where I found a lot of really consistent friends and really fell in love and found the relationship I had with Jesus.

What are some significant qualities/ facts about growing up in Alaska that affected your perception on life?

  • I spent Friday nights at home with my family. My parents would give us a topic, and we would have debates.
  • We did a lot of hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, but it was all free.  That is the life we lived in Alaska.
  • When I was 5, I flew from Alaska to NJ. It opened up the world to me. I saw a mall and got to see a movie. It was a big contrast from having no running water.
  • I was homeschooled for much of my upbringing, and my two sisters were my best friends.
  • I had the opportunity to do some private school, but I knew how to cut filet salmon before I ever learned how to put on make-up.
  • We would go to the food bank for food, but my parents always saved, saved, saved for travel experiences. My mom was concerned about me knowing what was in the outside world.
  • I was the youngest bank teller hired at the National Bank of Alaska, which really taught me a lot and forced me to grow up.

What was your college experience like? I visited Northwest and saw for the first time college students having fun and it didn’t involve drugs or alcohol and so I decided to go there. I just loved it, I started debate and had great friends. I ended up transferring a lot. When I moved to England, I fell in love with tea and my view of the world was changed. I was kind of the lone Christian. England was pretty spiritually dead in my opinion. People questioned everything. I studied theology and was taught that the Bible was a book. I realized my faith was not my parents. I had to develop & cultivate a relationship with the Lord on my own.

I transferred again and I went to AU and I fell in love with the city of DC.

I also spent a summer in Cambodia. That really showed me the power of missions and at that point I decided I would eventually make missions a part of my life.

For my last semester of undergrad, I went back to Northwest.

You moved around a lot! When did Andrew come into the picture? Five weeks before graduation, I met Andrew. At this point, I was really strong and really independent.  My father had always told me, “You will marry the one man that isn’t intimidated by you,” and on our first date Andrew said, “You don’t intimidate me.” It freaked me out. When I got home, I literally went right into my room and called my dad and told him.

Since you come from a close family, what was it like when you started dating Andrew? We dated all the way through graduation, which is when my family met him. Everyone flew in because I was speaking at the commencement. I handed Andrew an itinerary for the weekend, and he kept up. That weekend, he surprised me with Yankee tickets. I realized at that moment that he was a true leader. He knew what I needed even when I didn’t.

[blockquote]He’s the first man I ever dated. I dated a lot of boys, but he was the first man.[/blockquote]

Did Andrew pursue you? How did he treat you while you were dating? First date: He called me and asked me out. I remember how strong, confident, and sincere he was on the phone.

[blockquote]We went to Starbucks. I asked him about his relationship with God. A Starbucks date can be 5 minutes or 5 hours; ours was 5 hours.[/blockquote]

Day After First Date: Generally, the rule was not to call the next day. He called me that morning. This was when cell-phones first came out and I had a voice mail of him asking me to hang out again….And we hung out every day.

Second date: He took me to Coldstone and then opened the basketball gym for me and we played HORSE. While we were at Coldstone I quizzed him about the world. I was blown away at how smart he was.

During the relationship: He didn’t kiss me and there was no physical interaction until after we were engaged.

[blockquote]I’m the 4th generation in a line of pastors and I never met someone who loved God like Andrew did.[/blockquote]

Since you guys started dating so close to graduation, what happened after you graduated? We were together for 2 months, and then I moved back to Alaska and it was long distance from there. We were dating and engaged for 17 months total.

What did you do in the meantime? At that point my options were to apply for the Peace Corps, work with White Siberian tigers, travel with Holland America cruise lines, or compete for Miss America. I graduated in May 2004 and it was in June that I won Miss Alaska 2004.

Screen Shot 2014-02-12 at 12.19.52 PM

How did competing and winning Miss Alaska affect your self-image? I had always struggled with insecurity. The thing I appreciated about the experience was how confident the women were. Every single one of them were pursuing a degree. Miss America is a Scholarship Organization, not just a pageant.

[blockquote]I remember walking in and looking around the room and thinking “Wow. Women can do anything.”[/blockquote]

For me, it helped pay my way through college and helped me develop confidence in a new way. Differences were celebrated. Everyone was beautiful in their own way. I didn’t have to look like Barbie. I just had to look like me.

Screen Shot 2014-02-12 at 12.18.09 PMScreen Shot 2014-02-12 at 12.17.51 PM

So what happened with you and Andrew after winning Miss Alaska? Well, I love that he was with me before I made Miss Alaska. I remember, I called him and told him I didn’t win and he said “I don’t believe you.”

When did you get married? On June 24, 2005 we got married in Jamaica. We had a destination wedding. I flew from Alaska to Miami and Andrew flew from Seattle to Miami and then we flew to Jamaica together. So hugging him in the airport was awkward having been apart for awhile. We met up with our families in Jamaica. We went kayaking & hiking and it was so much fun. Then, we honeymooned  there for the next couple weeks.

Screen Shot 2014-02-12 at 12.17.43 PM  Screen Shot 2014-02-12 at 12.17.25 PM

After being apart for so long, how was married life? When we got to our new home, he had me close my eyes and he picked me up and he carried me across the threshold of our new town home in DC. We didn’t have a dinner table. We ate our first meal sitting on the dining room floor. I realized no matter where I was or what I was doing, if I had him, I would be okay.

He was a pastor and I was working as a Crisis Intervention Specialist. I was on call 24-7. My clients had to get better or they were going to jail. After a while, he felt like we were suppose to move to Seattle and I remember resisting it. We moved from there to Puyallup, Washington. I remember I saying, “Life will never be better than it was in DC.” I even said the same thing when I moved from Washington to Florida, and now I think the same thing.

Being that you're very accomplished and goal-oriented, what have been all your different jobs throughout the years? 1. At, 12 years old, my first job at Espresso Moes as a barista. 2. Sandwich shop 3. Bank Teller for National Bank of Alaska 4. Legal Clerk for Trudell Bowen Lingenbrink Law Firm 5. Nanny for Mr. Lingenbrink (on weekends) 6. Department of Health as a Legislative Analyst 7. Cannery on the slime line gutting fish 8. Crisis Intervention Specialist for Institute … 9. Childrens pastor at Puyallup Foursquare Church 10. Miss Alaska with the Miss America organization 11. Professor –Northwest University 12. Children/ Family Therapist at Good Samaritan Behavioral Health 13. Director of Student Mentoring in Student Development at SEU 14. Professor 15. (Currently training to be a fitness instructor at LA Fitness, just for fun.)

What qualities does Andrew have that you think are really important to look for in a man? Love for Jesus;  Intellect; Respect for others; Passion; Integrity and character above all; Respect for me and how he handled me when no one else was around; He didn’t put me in compromising situations; Common interests; Attraction; Such a great sense of humor.

What are the top 3 things you two value in your marriage? 1. Our non-negotable is time with one another; nothing gets scheduled without us consulting the other. That requires honest communication. 2. Fun. -- We love having fun together. We love laughing. 3. Private time with the Lord and with one another. Praying together. Theres nothing more incredible than hearing what Andrew asks God for, for me. It’s just amazing.

What's the key to having an interesting relationship? In order to have an interesting marriage. You have to be interesting people. We both love time together, but we both love our time apart. Andrew loves golf. I love Pilates. We love having things we’re pursuing on our own. He loves that I don’t stop at any point in life.

What is one piece of advice you would give to young girls? (Something that you know now but you wish you knew then.) Put God above all else. Enjoy your time with your family first. You’ll never get those moments back with your parents and siblings when its just you guys. Enjoy that, treasure that. I don’t regret spending Friday nights with my family. Worry little about who likes you. More than likely you are not going to marry your 8th grade love.

Since Valentine's Day is coming up, how do you keep your marriage alive, and do you have Valentines Day plans? We always go out. Our favorite spot is the Melting Pot. We’re more into experiences than gifts. We’ve gone to Paris & rome, Mexico, Jamaica, Disney world. We love quality time, with a great meal and great conversation. We’re also really big on cards. We always give each other handwritten deep thoughtful notes. That’s really important to us.

Deep breath. Process.  Maybe your pics won't look as adorable as these two, but you can rest assured that God will give you the desires of your heart too as they line up with His will!

There you have it: life behind the scenes with Christina Gard -- a woman who even faced some very challenging life experiences. (Which, believe it or not, were not mentioned in our long but super fun interview with Christina.)  She ultimately pursued God and her dreams, and along the way God gave her a great love relationship that enables her to continue doing that.  She supports him, he supports her, they support each other.

Little Black Dress

edit2-e1392085876504.jpg

On a recent holiday in Hawaii I was invited to an event that would require dressy attire. I was excited at the invite, but hadn't  packed anything fancy. I had only a couple of days to find the right dress and accessories that would work. I didn't want to spend a ton of money on a new outfit, since I had plenty of dresses at home, so I hit up my favorite bargain store- Forever 21! I was in search for a simple black dress. Black is always chic, and can be easily dressed up or down. After passing over several racks, my heart leapt when I saw a basic black dress for only $12.80! The dress fit great, and would work for the event. It was also an item I could actually wear on the rest of my Hawaiian getaway. With the right accessories I dressed the ensemble up! c950x609

Mixing high and low peices are key in making an outfit look expensive vs. cheap. I paired the bargain dress with a pair of earrings from Banana Republic, a gold and diamond bracelet from Macys, and some black patent leather Steve Madden shoes. A clutch always makes an outfit in my opinion. Since I didn't pack one on this trip, I improvised and used my Cynthia Rowley wallet! It's shape resembles a clutch so I am able to get a lot of use out of it.

The moral of the story is always be prepared! Pack a basic dress that can be dressed up or down on your trips. Accessories are key. Make sure you pack a versatile selection that will help make the most of your vacation attire.

Happy Styling!

Thrifty Thursday: Three Church Outfits on a Budget

Screen-Shot-2014-02-06-at-8.24.54-AM.png

[blockquote]It's always important to look your best and present yourself with class -- and that most certainly shouldn't change just because you're going to church. You don't have to wear a dress that goes down to your ankles or clunky penny-loafers to be presentable for church either. Check out these three different -- yet modest and cute -- outfits on a budget![/blockquote] (To see where we found each item of clothing for sale, click on the smaller pictures.)

[code]Screen Shot 2014-02-06 at 3.12.59 PM

[blockquote]Part of shopping on a budget and finding good deals means that you compare prices and weigh out your options. Do a Google shopping search to find items at different prices and stores that look alike. Then, check the ratings of the product and site. If you need more tips, feel free to email alexis@topbuttons.org.[/blockquote]

[blockquote]When you are replicating a look, make sure to make it your own. That's why we selected a shirt that's different, but still very inspired. Think about what items in an outfit really stand out to you and WHY! If you really like Carrie's shoes, then find similar ones and create your own outfits centered around that piece.[/blockquote]

[blockquote]This last look can be pulled together from so many basic items in your wardrobe, and since all of the pieces are neutral colors in black, white, and gold, they would be an investment to purchase because you'll be able to wear them again and again. [/blockquote][divider_line]
