2015 Oscars Celebs Rock the Red Carpet and Instagram

rs_634x1024-150222165650-634-gwyneth-paltrow-oscars.jpg

The night of the 2015 Oscars once again guaranteed that celebrities walking the red carpet at the Dolby Theater would be dressed top-notch. Actresses sported dresses by the best of the best designers. This past Sunday night left viewers 'oohing' and 'ahhing' while perhaps some young ladies also gathered inspiration for their 2015 prom dresses. We loved this years' dresses for their timeless elegance and our best picks are just that– classy and stunningly beautiful. 87th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Gweneth Paltrow, who was a presenter for the night, was captivating in a feminine pink Ralph and Russo gown. She stuck with a more classic-shaped dress and we absolutely love how she chose to show off the elegant neckline and bold flower by sleeking her hair back and accessorizing with blingy, bold earrings. The look was one of the more polished of the night.

87th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

We were swooning over 18-year-old actress Chloe Moretz's Old Hollywood glamour look for a few reasons.  First of all, she rocked ear cuffs which are a HUGE trend that we love. Her hair style choice and makeup showed off her natural beauty, and how fun are the pockets on her beautiful floral-print gown by Miu Miu? The subtle pattern and champagne color mixed perfectly, proving that floral patterns are still hot.

Reese Witherspoon is an actress who is well-known for dressing with class and top-notch style and this year she was stunning yet again on the red carpet. Notably, her and Chloe both decided to wear their blonde locks down with a center part. While a center part is not for everyone, we love how it tones down the formality of the extravagant dresses and makes the look seem do-able for a viewer wishing to draw inspiration for prom. Also, while Witherspoon may not have received an award that night, she rocked the Instagram game that day, documenting her entire day of Oscars-prep and giving shout-outs to Tom Ford for her amazingly flattering black and white gown and Tiffany and Co for her dazzling jewels.

Tips & Tricks to Find Your Summer Wardrobe on A Budget

summer-shopping.jpg

Shopping for the perfect summer wardrobe is very important, but in many places summer is such a short season that it comes and goes before we even get to wear our favorite pieces. Included in this article are a few tips that will help you make purchases that are both affordable and versatile enough to wear for seasons to come.

[divider_line]

    1. Tip #1: Shop the clearance rack at stores like Target. When there's a shift of seasons, what's left from last season goes on sale. Specifically look for DRESSES! Practically any dress can be fashioned in the summertime. Alexis found these on the 70% off rack, and depending on the occasion she can find somewhere to wear each of these dresses.Alexis' Thrifty Finds
    2. Tip #2: Buy a pair of nude sandal wedges! They are a must-have!! Although Alexis found the ones below brand new at Goodwill, they were originally from Target! The boots were an added bonus find, and were so cheap because they were purchased in the off season. Sometimes a purchase now can save you money in the long-run. (Note: Only buy thrifted shoes if they are new or gently used.)

      Alexis' Shoes

    3. Tip #3: One-piece swimsuits are cheaper, more comfortable, and provide more coverage! Instead of trying to buy two separate pieces with the added cost of each piece, why not pay one price? Plus, when you're out and about with friends at the pool or beach, you won't have to worry about adjusting your suit. Alexis found a red halter one-piece with ruffles across the bust for $15 at Bealls Outlet. Other affordable one-piece suits can be found at Target, H&M, and even Charlotte Russe.Bathing Suits
    4. Tip #4: Buy thrifted florals!! They will surely be in style for summer, and pop when you where them in the fall. If you want to make a statement, raid the racks of your local thrift store for some floral finds. Floral print is one of those trends that never fades, so there's always lots of options at the thrift store, PLUS you'll be sure to get something that NO ONE else has. Thrifted Florals[divider_line]

We hope you enjoyed these tips, and we look forward to seeing your rock your summer style on a budget! From comfy dresses, to shoe essentials, to modest swimwear, and even to floral prints - there's so many ways to put together an affordable summer wardrobe that will carry into next season.

The Stylish Reese Witherspoon

reese2.jpg

reese4In late April, Reese attended the 26th Annual Colleagues' Luncheon in Beverly Hills, California wearing a sleek green and blue Oscar de la Renta dress. This event was both a luncheon and fashion show benefiting the Children's Institute.  Alongside Witherspoon, the Champion of Children award was presented to Princess Charlene of Monaco with her work in charities overseas. reese5Witherspoon was also found attending the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards earlier this year in Santa Monica wearing a Giambattista Valli Couture top and skirt. Her ensemble is easily depicted as a dress until you look closer to find out it is two separate pieces! We love the different textures found in the top, and how the colors emphasize her blue eyes.

Trendy Tuesday: LOVING Love 21

love21_woventops_image.jpg

Normally we use this post every week to talk about a trend or style coming up for spring and summer, but today we're going to talk about a line of clothing that is beautiful and affordable- Love 21. This line comes from Forever 21, and is formally called "Love 21 Contemporary" and on top of just being the contemporary line, it's also better understood by the fashionistas who love F21 as the slightly "bigger" line. By this we mean, Love 21 clothing is a half-size larger than the Forever 21 equivalent. But whilst perusing the website, the things we noticed were that Love 21 clothing is just a touch more modest. Of course, like it's parent line it sells crop tops and bodycon dresses, but other items that it sells - dresses, for example - are longer and looser fitting. So today we'd like to spotlight some adorable pieces you can find at Forever 21 - just look for the Love 21 label!

DROP-WAIST DRESSES

We're loving this upcoming spring/summer trend that is shying away from the form-fitting, uber short and constricting dresses of the past and looking forward to looser dresses that focus on the cool shape and style of the dress, and often the print and texture of the fabric, rather than focusing on showing off body parts!

00127600-02

This floral drop-waist dress is fun, chic, past fingertip length (yay!), and only $24.80

00072210-02

This lace drop-waist dress combines loads of spring and summer trends all in one dress! Chic black & white, lace (always in style), and an affordable price - $29.80

LONGER LENGTHS

Sick of mini-skirts? Unlike a lot of teen oriented retailers, the Love 21 line carries skirts that aren't super short - but also aren't maxis!

00066040-01

This cute knee-length skirt keeps it classy with a fun print, and is priced at just $24.80

00066095-02

This button-down skirt is perfect for spring and summer, but makes a great transition piece as well! $27.80

KOOL KIMONOS

Another trend we're loving at Love 21? Sheer, breathable kimonos. Throw one over just about any outfit and you've just added come culture, class, and comfort to your outfit.

00128805-02

This fun and easy kimono combines a few things we love - art deco style and chevron stripes. This beauty can be found for $39.80

00126372-02

This sheer kimono has a fun print - and we love the way it's paired with faux leather pants and a simple tee! $19.80

Loving these trends? Try some of these as well: Contrast-Collared Button Downs, Stark Black & White, Holographic Accessories, Bomber Jackets, Fun Sweatshirts, and Smile-Worthy Shoes

Our Best Picks from the Golden Globes

picstich.jpg

This year's 71st Annual Golden Globes Awards was a night to remember when it came to select celebrities dresses. Top Buttons was very excited to see what these stars were going to wear down the red carpet this time. Our team selected three of the most beautiful dresses that were worn at the event. Mila Kunis. Photo by Wally Skalij.

Our top favorite was a shimmering ombre Gucci dress worn by actress Mila Kunis. We can tell that she knows how to dress to impress at an event as important as this. This floor length dress attracted all eyes to Mila as she arrived at the awards.

Jennifer Lawrence. Photo by Jason Merritt.

Another one of our favorite dresses by designer Christian Dior was worn by well-known actress Jennifer Lawrence. Lawrence was presented a Golden Globe award for Best Supporting Actress in the famous motion picture "American Hustle". We loved how she graced the stage in her white gown looking flawless as she accepted her award.

Taissa Farmiga. Photo by Jordan Strauss.

Last but not least, Taissa Farmiga made her red carpet appearance in a knee length, lace Elie Saab dress. She accompanied her dress with Stuart Weitzman sandals giving it a more casual yet classy look for the awards. She was one of very few who decided to be different by wearing a short dress for the event.

Fit For A Princess: Creating Princess Moments One Dress At A Time

ffap.jpg

1385007_10201640723632693_1636256025_n

On a recent Instagram post the Top Buttons community of followers got a sneak peek on Alexis' involvement with something called Fit For A Princess. Here's the scoop:

Fit For A Princess (FFAP) is an organization in Lakeland, FL whose purpose is to create 'princess moments' for underprivileged high school students who would normally be unable to attend their prom. FFAP has carried out this vision by previously holding dress collections throughout the academic year to donate to the girls of Kathleen High School.
While founder Rachel Kelly was studying in her undergrad at Southeastern University, she read an article about a local high school student who couldn't attend her senior prom because she couldn't afford a dress.
“I realized in that moment that I wasn’t going to let a dress be the reason a girl would miss out on a Princess Moment,” says Kelly.
Since then, Rachel Kelly's dream for these girls became a reality. Currently, FFAP has over 200 dresses in their collection, although they are still looking to expand the variety of not only dresses but now accessories too. In addition, FFAP has received a lot of positive publicity, expansion, and donations. Miss Teen Florida has even offered to collect and donate pageant dresses from fellow pageant contestants and she has promised her presence at the dress give-away event in February.
“I got the call when I was in the store shopping. I literally threw the cart down the aisle and almost dropped my phone,” says Kelly. “You wouldn’t believe how many people are backing this. I have so much support."
1398811_10151665441296300_1389290860_o

This movement to create 'princess moments' has now been adopted by Florida Southern as well. Because two universities have now teamed up to make this event possible, Kelly expects to collect double the amount of dresses and even provide dresses for double the amount of girls by opening up their event to the students of Lakeland Senior High School as well as maintaining their involvement with Kathleen High School. To ensure that this vision is possible, Top Buttons is also supporting FFAP's endeavors and will be assisting in collecting dresses as well.

On February 22, 2014, Top Buttons will be teaming up with the FFAP team to transform Southeastern University's Sportsplex into a fancy boutique full of dresses, where high school students are invited to shop the dress selection completely free of charge with the opportunity to become a princess. On the day of the event, Top Buttons stylists and FFAP volunteers will be dressed as personal fashion consultants to create a dream come true.

More information regarding donations or volunteering can be found by emailing Alexis Gauthier at Alexis@topbuttons.org, or by contacting the founder herself -- Rachel Kelly -- at FitForAPrincess1@yahoo.com or visiting their Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/fitforaprincess1

DIY: UPCYCLING A DRESS INTO A TOP

2013-06-17-15.30.34-web-new.jpg

Shorts, dresses, shirts, shoes! We grow out of our clothes but sometimes are still in love with them. Well, Miss Danielle has a solution to upcycling our dresses into shirts.

2013-06-17 15.46.36 web

Now while there are no green thumb-like requirements, you will need to have access to a sewing machine* (or be handy with a needle and thread). Other staples include:

  • Dress(es)
  • Measuring tape/ Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine*/ Needle

First off, select a dress that you are willing to cut up. It could be a dress that has shrunk or is too short, or it could be a dress that you have had for years and want to bring to life. Next you will need to measure the length you want the shirt to be. You will then cut the garment leaving you with the start of your new top! *Before cutting the garment, keep in mind that sewing the hem will change the desired length of the top.* Once you have scrapped the remains of your OLD dress you will then measure out the length of the hem. Using a sewing machine is the quickest way to hem a garment, but the good ole fashion way with a needle and thread will give you similar end results. If you are NOT capable with either option, take your garment to a local seamstress or tailor. This option is stress free and most shops will charge no more than fifteen dollars. So next time you go to toss an old dress or even your JEWELRY, stop and think of the option of upcycling!

Must Have Closet Item: The Shirtdress

IMG_7680-web.jpg

Every girl has a t-shirt & jean kind of day (whether we'd like to admit it or not). But having days that freshen up your look and don't require much effort, are not as far fetched as they seem.

The solution to an effortless yet chic look: the Shirtdress. And boy are we all smiles over this "easy going" apparel choice.

Chunky accessories such as this coral necklace are just as effortless as  shirtdresses AND complete the outfit.

FOR THE PETITE: BUYING NAME BRAND DRESSES FOR LESS

katie3.jpg

Anyone who knows me [Katie] knows that I adore a cute, girly Lilly Pulitzer dress. Lilly dresses can be expensive but if you’re shopping on a budget and don't mind waiting for the sales, they can be affordable. My secret is buying the junior girls dresses. These dresses can be $100.00 to $200.00 dollars cheaper than the women’s dresses. Not all of the junior girls dresses work for my body type, it is important to make sure they’re not too short, but when I find the right one I make sure to add certain accessories that I know will complete the look. Personally some of my favorite accessories are my monogram necklace, bubble necklace, Michael Kors watch, and Tory Burch flats. Now I know these accessories I chose are not cheap, but if you shop the outlets, you can save a bundle, or shop for cheaper accessories that will look just as great! katie4

katie1

If junior girls dresses don’t work for your body type then Lilly Pulitzer has 2 major online sales per year with certain boutiques participating: the New Year Cheer sale and the Endless Summer sale. During these sales dresses can be up to 75 % off. It can be difficult to wait for these sales but if you have your eye on an expensive dress, it is well worth it. In saying that, not every Lilly Pulitzer dress is as expensive as others, they have cute t-shirt dresses that are under $100.00. The t-shirt dresses are functional because you can dress them up or down by simply changing your accessories. They are great investment pieces for all seasons.

So if you are a petite young women, you might want to keep this idea in mind for your next purchase! Just watch out for the issue of length... Personally, I work to keep the dresses and skirts at least to mid thigh.
Have a great day,

MODEST TIPS FROM THE TALL GIRL

IMG_7588.jpg

With longer legs come greater challenges to dress modestly, especially with the current trends.  The goal is not to set a standard by which all judgements on modesty should be made, but rather offer a perspective and some suggestions to consider when shopping with modesty in mind from one tall girl to another.  Miss Amelia with her breathtaking smile and gorgeous long blonde hair,  is 5 feet 9 inches tall. She is a full head taller than most of her peers.

IMG_7694

The issue of finding dresses and shorts that reach her mid thigh has been a challenge for her for many years.  If a person is petite or average in height, they might not realize just how difficult it is to find stores and styles that offer more conservative options for taller girls. Tall girls living in the southern states might have even more trouble.  With skimpy summer trends and squelching heat comes the battle of flesh versus staying true to values.

"It is possible, if you are willing to work at it," says the resident tall girl, Miss Amelia. She was all smiles as she shared her challenges and the tricks that she has learned to dress with dignity, despite the push of the culture to do the opposite.

IMG_7603

IMG_7602

When asked which stores she has the best luck finding clothes that fit her tall frame and body type, she said, "I get most of my shorts from J Crew, and occasionally Loft.  The 'teenager stores' don't make an alternative for taller girls like me. Their options generally consist of short and shorter. Both J Crew and Loft make it so easy to wear longer shorts, because they have all the same patterns but offer them in a 3, 5, or 8-inch length."  The petite young woman could more easily find shorts that reach mid thigh, while someone with Amelia's height might have to wear at least a 5 or 8 inch inseam to even get close to mid thigh.  Then there are the "bermudas."  Not everyone is fond of this knee length style.  They are, however, a super safe option. Some might argue that they don't look fantastic on their body type.  This thought process is likely encouraged by the current trends to wear shorts that barely cover one's bottom.  When all the fashion magazines show styles and celebrities wearing super short shorts, it seems natural that many would want to do the same.  But that doesn't mean that they should!

IMG_7682 text

Taller girls may also be limited in the current trends they can wear modestly.  Responding to this idea, Amelia said that a trend she wished she could pull off is the high waisted shorts.  "They look so cute on petite girls with a tucked in shirt and the right accessories.  But when I wear them it seems like all you see are my mile long legs!  Unfortunately that's one trend I've had to give up on."  She also admitted that she doesn't always wear the longer shorts, but that she tries her best to balance it out by wearing a looser fitted shirt that undeniably provides full coverage on top to balance the outfit out.

Here are some trends that Amelia likes to wear and she added some tips to make the trend more modest for the tall girl.

IMG_7664

The Tunic is adorable to wear to outdoor lunches and beachy events, but she recommends wearing thicker leggings, jeggings, or even comfy skinny jeans underneath.  Otherwise, if you bend over at all, everything will be exposed.

IMG_7669

IMG_7654

The patterned shirt dress is classy.  And this particular dress does hit mid thigh on Amelia, but she still feels more comfortable in it (especially in this time of year) with a pair of tights and tall boots.  It must be added that with this young lady, an outfit isn't complete without the right accessories!

IMG_7659

IMG_7651

With the longer length of this dress hitting just above her knee, she  feels comfortable wearing the wedges to make it dressier.  Often times a shorter dress paired with high heeled shoes make the dress appear even shorter.  This is something for the tall girl to keep in mind when trying to dress more modestly.

IMG_7645

So what can keep a tall girl motivated when the modest fashion odds are stacked up against her?  Good role models? A scripture verse?  Accountability?  Any and all of these ideas would be valid and helpful.  Amelia comes from a large family.  She has 5 brothers, and 17 cousins.  There are many little eyes looking up to her which keeps her in check.  "Since my family is pretty close I have my brothers that constantly monitor my outfits. They make their opinions pretty vocal and will let me know if they think I’m wearing something too short, even when I don't ask for their opinion." In addition to sharing about her young family members, She said that her Mother has been a great example and has encouraged her along the way. "My mom is an influence that helps me keep my standards high. Since she is also tall and has shown me great alternatives while being fashionable. I also stay motivated knowing that I don’t dress to impress people on earth, but want to be a representation of Christ through the way I look and act," she said.

IMG_7698

It is safe to conclude that it does take more effort to find decent clothing for the taller young lady, but like Amelia says, "don’t give in to what everyone else says is 'normal.'  "I know first hand that being tall and modest is a hard combination, but it builds character and makes your outfits worth the extra effort. I have one last tip when buying shorts or dresses that are a little shorter," She continued. "Try buying a size up from what you would normally wear. There is no need to feel self conscious about the size of your clothing. When you wear bigger clothes it not only makes you look slimmer, but also draws the attention away from your legs. This adds a little length and width, instead of your clothes seeming tight and short."

Thank you, Amelia!

More Tips from the Tall Girl can be expected pre-Summer!
