Necklace Layering 101

Necklace layering is a popular trend that is stylish, fun, and always makes a statement. However, with all of the jewelry options out there, it is often times hard to put together a set that works. Recently, I was able to take a peek into the studio of jewelry maker Jane Lee of Jane Ann Jewelry. She was kind enough to let me view her beautiful collection of accessories, where I handpicked four necklaces perfect for layering. They are worth the investment, and can be worn several different ways. I like to refer to them as the “staple necklaces” of your jewelry wardrobe. Here are six different looks that you can achieve using the following four necklaces.

This gold chain necklace is a great staple to have in your jewelry aresenal. It can be worn with several different necklace combinations due to its simplistic design.

I love how versatile these circle pendant necklaces are. They can be worn alone or layered.

I suggest having two circle pendant necklaces, one smaller and one larger pendant.

A gold bar is a must! It is a solid piece that looks gorgeous on its own but really stands out when layered with other necklaces.

Spring has arrived in all of its glory. What better way to celebrate than with some bright colored earrings! With statement earrings being a major trend for spring, these beauties from Forever 21 are a perfect way to add a pop of color to your outfits.

These teal drop earrings are trendy, fresh, and fun. They are inexpensive and in my book a great way to spend $5.99.

Ushering in the season with colorful accessories is a great way to start transitioning your wardrobe to happier,  vibrant colors.

Trendy Tuesday: The "New" Neoprene

When you think of neoprene, you've probably got a less-than-fashionable picture in your head: scuba gear. But fresh off the runway, and seen on celebrities everywhere, this stretchy fun fabric is taking on a new role in the fashion industry. We've found a few new ways to incorporate this trend to your everyday life.  

This neoprene sleeveless peplum top is perfect for spring and summer with its cool toned print. Find it at BlueFly on sale for $25

Again through BlueFly, we found this beautiful coral v-neck dress. The classic cut is enhanced with neoprene that hugs without being too much! $60

This simple neoprene sweatshirt is accented with a fun design, and is easy to pair with just about anything. Since neoprene is still cooling and breezy, it's good to go for all your spring and summer adventures! $27 on sale at ASOS!

Neoprene is also awesome for your gadgets too! Not only is the outside still fresh and fun, but neoprene cases are padded for protection and the fabric will resist letting water in! These can be found all over the web, but we love this print from Vera Bradley, for $38!

2014 Fall/Winter New York Fashion Week: The Recap

Fashion week is always an exciting time. It's when designers, editors and fashionistas all come together for the common love of fashion. Everyone eagerly anticipates the beautiful silhouettes, luxurious fabrics and colors that will be trending in the days ahead. Of the many collections shown during New York Fashion Week, here are the ones that left the biggest impression on us. J Crew is the perfect marriage between classic and modern. We love their genius mix of patterns, layers and color pallets. The reoccurring pairing of white and black in this season's collection has stood out to us along with the abundance of floral patterns.

Kate Spade is always a breath of fresh air with structured, sophisticated lines and girly whimsy. We are used to her designs living up to her slogan "live colorfully" being full of color and vivid brights, but we are loving this collection of neutrals that screams Audrey Hepburn.

Tory Burch always wows us with her simple, yet elegant designs. This season she incorporated a little medieval flare into her collection. We especially love her shirt dresses, over the knee boots and knee highs.

This season's Michael Kors collection falls nothing short of luxurious, dramatic, and romantic. The flowy fabrics, pleated skirts, and fur are perfection. We are happy to see that fur will be a trend that is not going away any time soon.

Rebecca Minkoff's designs are always cool, fashion forward, and city-chic. She prides herself in creating clothing that is stylish and statement worthy, yet wearable. She accomplishes her goal with this season's street-friendly metallics and edgy details.

NYFW never ceases to inspire its audience. Year after year designers wow us with new concepts and innovative designs. The fashion seen on the runways doesn't always align with Top Button's vision. In the midst of plunging necklines and rising hemlines, we are here to take designs and allow them to inspire us to find similar articles of clothing that are modest and wearable without compromising our values.

Little Black Dress

On a recent holiday in Hawaii I was invited to an event that would require dressy attire. I was excited at the invite, but hadn't  packed anything fancy. I had only a couple of days to find the right dress and accessories that would work. I didn't want to spend a ton of money on a new outfit, since I had plenty of dresses at home, so I hit up my favorite bargain store- Forever 21! I was in search for a simple black dress. Black is always chic, and can be easily dressed up or down. After passing over several racks, my heart leapt when I saw a basic black dress for only $12.80! The dress fit great, and would work for the event. It was also an item I could actually wear on the rest of my Hawaiian getaway. With the right accessories I dressed the ensemble up! 

Mixing high and low peices are key in making an outfit look expensive vs. cheap. I paired the bargain dress with a pair of earrings from Banana Republic, a gold and diamond bracelet from Macys, and some black patent leather Steve Madden shoes. A clutch always makes an outfit in my opinion. Since I didn't pack one on this trip, I improvised and used my Cynthia Rowley wallet! It's shape resembles a clutch so I am able to get a lot of use out of it.

The moral of the story is always be prepared! Pack a basic dress that can be dressed up or down on your trips. Accessories are key. Make sure you pack a versatile selection that will help make the most of your vacation attire.

Valentine's Day Gift Ideas

Valentine's Day is just around the corner. Whether you are in need of a gift for a friend, parent, or loved one we have 5 tried and true options for you to choose from. Let the gift giving begin! In our opinion you can't go wrong with a bouquet of flowers. Florals are pretty, cheery, and most importantly easy to find!  Flowers can be found at your local supermarket, floral shop, and even online. If you are up for a little diy action you can create your own customized floral arrangement and vase. Here is a cute option to get your creative wheels turning.

The next gift may seem obvious, but it is often forgotten. The CARD! It is the perfect companion to every gift. It is the icing on the cake that allows you to share a meaningful message with the recipient. Just like flowers, they are easy to find. You can grab one at the store. Or if you are a diy-er, you could make one like this or this at home.

Candles are an indulgent every girl loves. Add a bouquet of flowers to the picture and you have a match made in heaven! Diptyque candles are about as heavenly as you can get when it comes to candles. They do come with a hefty price tag however, more affordable options can be found at places like Target and TJ Max.

Jewelry can seem like an overwhelming option when looking for a gift. However, personalized jewelry takes the guesswork out and narrows down the selection. Nordstrom has an excellent inventory of monogrammed bracelets, necklaces and earrings. Etsy is also a  great option for finding personalized jewelry.

Nothing says Valentine’s day like candy! Just about everyone we know has a sweet tooth. Whether store bought or home made, you can’t go wrong with candy! Who wouldn't be happy to receive this or this for a gift?!

Along with the typical and always popular floral prints, lace, and pastel colors that are staples for spring, a new trend is rising up with the flowers - holographic material. Sounds futuristic, right? But holographic clothes aren't just for the Jetson's anymore, it's for all of us. There are two ways to do this trend - go all the way, or just a touch here and there. For those of you who are all in on the holographic/iridescent trend, get ready because the sheen and shimmer of this trend will knock you off your feet.

Trendy Tuesday: Smile-Worthy Shoes

With winter wrapping up and spring emerging, it's time to put away those over-sized boots and break out some cute flats that will usher in the happiness and warmth of spring - starting with your toes!

Adorable, right? Chiara Ferragni is a fashion blogger who has designed these funky mismatched shoes. Though each shoe has it's own design, together the pair add a fun and fresh detail that will bring any outfit to life.

Here's the catch - these adorable shoes cost a whopping $211 US dollars. Tears, I know. That was our initial reaction too. Luckily, this sweet trend has taken off and can be found all over the place (and on the cheap, too!)

If you've never heard of ModCloth, get right on out of town, because it is one of the most adorable online shopping sites in the world. Full of vintage and fun styles, ModCloth supplies us ladies with the perfect mix of modern & vintage attire! ModCloth also conveniently has a selection of flats that remind us of Chiara's - but for much less.

Want cute styles and beauty products without breaking the bank? Never underestimate the potential of the Dollar Tree or other dollar stores! Featured below are just a few of the awesome items Fashion Cents Contributor, Alexis,  found while roaming the racks at her local Dollar Tree.

1. e.l.f. Lip Color - Alexis often purchases this brand of cosmetics at Target because of its great quality combined with its appealing price, however, when she saw this lip color at the Dollar Tree, she just HAD to invest. At other stores, all of e.l.f. cosmetics are typically priced between $1-5, which is still a bargain.
2. Animal-Print Sleep Mask - Get your beauty sleep and look cute doing it. Animal prints make a BOLD statement. For just $1, you can block out light to maximize your sleep quality.

Ways to Wear: The Infinity Scarf

The infinity scarf is noted for its never-ending versatility and rightfully so. Infinity scarves can be worn casually or styled to dress up a look. Below are a few ways to wear the original cotton infinity scarf.

Most infinity scarves can be worn full length or open, as shown above. This option is perfect for a casual look. If the scarf is a bit lengthy when draped once, double it up as shown below. You want to be careful the scarf does not fall too far past your waist.

            

Left: When doubling over an infinity scarf, your preference will ultimately decide the look. You can pull the scarf tight to taper the scarf (as pictured) or pull the ends of the scarf together, which will even out the scarf to the same length. By doing this, the scarf will appear fuller and there will be no worries with the length getting in the way.

Middle: The knot is always a fun change from the typical layering and doubling. You can achieve 'the knot' by creating a standard knot on one end. Once you put it on you can adjust both the size and placement of the knot.

Far right: For a quirky twist with an infinity scarf, make an incomplete knot and "fluff" the scarf to give the appearance of a tie. For example, begin with a standard knot but do NOT pull it all the way through. Instead, create a tail with the scarf; you can pull it out for a fuller look (as pictured), or tuck in the fabric for a 'skinny' tie.

Splurge or Save

These Valentino heels have been on my Pinterest board entitled “Wishlist” for quite some time now. With a steep price tag of $945, they will probably stay there for good. That's why I was ecstatic to see their twin at Windsor for a fraction of the price! Of course, the quality is nowhere near Valentino standards, but if you still want the "look," these shoes achieve that goal. Menswear Fashion

A woman's role in the corporate world has come along way. Women continue to gain respect on a professional level, and now we are taking it to the NEXT level with a menswear inspired wardrobe.

Dress suits and close toed pumps have always been a staple for women in the workplace. Now, thanks to the heavy influence of fashion, the barrier between a man and woman's closets has disappeared. Everything from vests, loafers, and trousers are making their way into a woman's wardrobe (and we can't say we are not a tad excited).

Below is a prime example of a revamped 9-5 look. We stuck with slimming black trousers and a simple (but elegant) undershirt. *Keep in mind the camisole is for a profession, not a night out. Be aware of how low cut your blouse is.* Then there is the fun part, adding a twist to the original oxford and blazer. Both blazers are boyfriend style, but each offer a different look...the black is traditional and the muted grey adds a touch of flare. As for the oxford pump, it is close toed AND office appropriate. Add the finishing touch of a statement piece, a delicately molded, yet bold necklace.

For a more casual work environment or out-of office occasion, go for the classic button down and tuxedo pant. The rich blue button down pops against the black pants, and the tuxedo pant detail pays homage to it's original design. Add a dressy loafer, edgy clutch, and bowler hat to the mix and you are ready to face the day, in and out of the office! P.s. bowler hats are adorable and complete any menswear affect!

Styling 101: Weekend Picks

The Summer of long days by the poolside and being school free are coming to an end. Although we are trading our swimwear & fashion forward days for uniforms [some of us business attire] we MUST not give up on our weekends. In other words ladies, we cannot forget that we still have the weekends to dress in remembrance of our carefree days.

So without further ado, we now deem every weekend a reTREAT! Here are two of our favorite -completely different- picks to get your weekend started!

First up is the infamous nautical themed look. We chose to play with the contrasting shades of blue, the lighter hue to brighten the look, and the darker blue to be the root color of the outfit. Add simple studs and fabulous sunnies to complete the head-to-toe style.
